The Department of Animal Welfare & Conservation is currently recruiting for reliable, confident team members to join us on a seasonal contract through to November 2014.
Working as part of the successful Animal & Welfare team you will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment for both you and the public by adhering to associated risk assessments and protocols without exception.
You will be expected to practice high levels of animal husbandry and assist in the welfare of the animals within the park. As well as ensuring the visitor experience is exceptional by delivering excellent customer service at all times.
The successful applicant should demonstrate a passion for Animal Welfare & Conservation, be highly motivated, flexible and committed to Woburn Safari Park’s high standards of husbandry and welfare. Candidates must have previous “hands on” practical experience of working with a range of animals and an animal related qualification i.e. Diploma in the Management of Zoo and Aquarium Animals.
Preference will be given to applicants that have worked and/or volunteered within the following fields: Zoo’s, Safari Park’s, Farming/Agriculture & Equestrian.
As an essential requirement for this role, successful candidates should possess excellent communication skills, demonstrable experience of dealing with the public, together with the ability to work effectively within a team.

Purpose of Position

To ensure safe and efficient animal husbandry is practised at all times. The post-holder
will be expected to report and advice on husbandry and staff safety matters, via the
Head of Section (HOS) and HADW. Responsible for ensuring the Department’s and
the Park’s Objectives are the driving force behind all his/her activities within the Area
including ensuring the best possible customer experience is delivered within their area
or responsibility.

Tasks and responsibilities

To maintain standards of husbandry and animal care as set by the HADW, and Head
of Section (HOS) or keeping staff with seniority as determined by HOS.

To ensure the most effective use of all resources at all times, both financial and
otherwise.

 To be aware of procedures in case of accident or fire.

To ensure that company policies and procedures are carried out as stated in the
company/staff handbooks.

To ensure the visitor experience including ‘special visits’ are exceptional within the
constraints of the resources available and to support the culture of delivering
exceptional customer service

To ensure health and safety standards and associated administration is maintained to
a high standard by adhering to protocols, following risk assessments and identify and
communicating any potential problems/risks to HOS to ensure they can be avoided.

To ensure adequate administrative records are kept in conjunction with the HOS and
departmental administrator.
 To identify and advise the HOS and HAWD on potential improvements possible within
the animal department.

To undertake any and all practical work within the animal collection as directed and
in accordance with the appropriate protocols.

To support the culture of delivery of exceptional customer service.

To undertake tasks as directed by the HOS AND HAWD.

To ensure a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance at all times.

About the role
Focusing on animal welfare & husbandry, and adventurers’ experience, you will lead, motivate & develop the Ungulates team of around 15 dedicated staff, to ensure they maintain the highest possible standards. As the team and department develop, you will constantly be seeking ways to maximise adventurer experience, whilst creating the most stimulating environment possible for our animals. Since we’re big on conservation, education and research, you’ll have a big part to play in that too. Taking an active role in the wider elements of the Zoo, you will support with the delivery of revenue-growing activities (e.g. Xtra Adventures) and suggest methods to encourage guests’ footfall and dwell time within Zoo areas of the Resort. A typical day will see you promoting a safe and exciting environment for both your team and your animals. You will have a great attention to detail, and be able to prioritise your resources to maximise efficiency within the team. You will manage your time between hands on operational needs whilst keeping a close eye on recruitment, training, and continued development of your people.

About you
Our ideal candidate will have solid experience of working with Ungulates and will ideally have a recognised qualification in captive animal management. You will have passion and excitement for your chosen field, with a keen drive to utilize advances in modern animal management. With previous experience of leading a team, you will have confidence in making both team & operational decisions. With an understanding of our family friendly resort brand, you will be an excellent communicator to engage our adventurers in our exciting collection across the park. You will have a good business acumen, with a desire to develop the department operationally & provide extra revenue to the business. You will be flexible, able to work full time 40 hours per week on a variable rota basis which will include weekends and bank holidays.

ISIS mission is “To facilitate international collaboration in zoos and aquariums through the collection and sharing of knowledge on animal care.”  We are the largest non-profit organization serving 800 zoos & aquariums in 80 countries with their animal management needs.  The ZIMS web-based solution is the world standard software to manage almost 3 million animals and 10,000 species.  This solution improves animal inventory management, institutional planning, member staff efficiencies, and cost management. 
Our go-to-market strategies require us to balance being both a non-profit and a software company.  The company (annual revenues range from $4-$7 million) develops proprietary, web technology with 50 associates (employees and contractors) to deliver a full suite of wildlife recordsmanagement services, including:

Position Summary
This position is primarily responsible for collaboratively and efficiently helping to plan, design, launch and manage the studbook and population management aspects of ISIS software products in support of ISIS mission and ISIS goals, and those of our partner Associations around the world.  This position requires both technical and social skills. The technical aspects includes gathering and analyzing data and writing use cases, based on an in-depth understanding of studbooks, all related legacy software, institutional animal records data, population management software (such as PMx) and theory, and the multiple ways in which different zoological associations use studbooks to guide and promote population management. The social aspects involve the ability to work with a diverse range of zoological association and institutions, building engagement, and developing broad cooperative consensus on the design and functions of ZIMS Studbook/Population Management features … even when there may be different philosophies and practices.  
The position has no supervisory responsibilities but must be able to interact with other ISIS product team members and representatives of other institutions and associations in a consensus-building way, always professional and constructive.

Essential Responsibilities
These duties and responsibilities describe the scope of the responsibility and essential functions of this position, but should not be considered to be an all-inclusive listing of work:
  • Meets with decision makers, systems owners, and end users as well as evaluating existing software to define population management and studbook requirements, system goals, and identify and resolve systems issues.
  • Contributes to or leads design sessions in prototyping screens, reports, function and tools, for the purpose of enhancing this part of ZIMS. Facilitates expression of different views and perspectives professionally, at all times.
  • Documents and communicates completely and effectively with ZIMS product manager and/or system developers as needed.
  • Coordinates and performs in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for studbook and population management functions, and other post-implementation support.
  • Provides orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.
  • Handles queries from users on an ongoing basis
  • Other duties and responsibilities:


Qualifications and Experience
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent preferred. Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university with major or minor in population biology (genetics and demography), or conservation or evolutionary biology, with suitable coursework.
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
  • Experience with zoological data or equivalent, such as studbooks, SPARKS and/or Poplink, PMx, is necessary.

Other Skills and Abilities
  • Must possess strong work ethic, integrity, professionalism, organization and be able to perform independently. 
  • Synthesizes complex or diverse information objectively; Collects and researches data. Understands small population biology and its uses for zoological management. We require one additional Seasonal Rangers to join Bristol Zoo’s Ranger Team within the Learning Department.  The successful applicants will be staffing the walkthroughs and delivering some of the enclosure talks, as well as selling nectar in the ‘Feed the Lorikeets’ exhibit.    A further aspect is to assist with Bristol Zoo’s behaviour change campaign when necessary. Seasonal Rangers are very guest-focussed, enhancing our guests’ experience of the Zoo, and helping to meet our charitable conservation and education mission.

Our Learning Department requires a part-time Education Officer and Lecturer.
You will be required to teach sessions within the Zoo’s purpose-built Conservation Education Centre, on a range of topics, to booked groups of varying age and ability; also to assist with many other tasks within the Department, including seasonal activities.  You will also be required to deliver lectures to students enrolled on a foundation degree course in partnership with SGS (Stroud and South Gloucestershire College) and UWE (University of the West of England).

Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation, research and education.

We currently have a vacancy for a Temporary Assistant Team Manager (maternity cover), to join our busy Aquarium section from June 2014. The successful candidate will supervise and work alongside Keepers to undertake daily animal care duties, focusing on welfare, hygiene and life support. They will ensure that all exhibits are of an excellent standard for both animals and visitors alike, and provide outstanding customer care.

The successful candidate will have considerable experience of working in a zoo/aquarium and have a thorough understanding of the contribution ex situ populations of animals can make to education, science and conservation. They will be expected to have a degree in a relevant biological science (or have accrued an equivalent knowledge base) and understand how scientific method can be used to contribute to both ex situ & in situ conservation. They must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the biology and husbandry of marine & freshwater fish and of aquatic invertebrate and have a proven track record in both conservation breeding and exhibitory. Excellent exhibit theming skills are a requirement of this role. The successful candidate will have outstanding observational skills, attention to detail and be committed to ensuring the highest possible standards of animal health and welfare.

Candidates must also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and should have some management experience as they will be assisting the team manager in all aspects of running the department. They will be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages – familiarity of ZIMS is desirable but appropriate training will be provided if required. Experience in conducting and publishing scientific research and of working in field conservation programmes are also desirable.   

Salary is £23,487 per annum for a 40 hour week.

The impression we create through our 140 acre zoological park, Marwell Zoo, with its wide array of exotic and endangered species and the family of talented people we employ who share our passion and bring our vision to life.

We are currently looking to recruit a part time, Trainee Animal Keeper. Working 16 hours per week over 2 days, responsibilities will include ensuring high standards of animal welfare, health and animal husbandry at all times and keeping daily checks and records. Although our Trainee Animal Keepers will work on a variety of different sections, a keen interest in birds would be advantageous for this role.
The successful candidate will be able to work well as part of a team, have the ability to use their initiative and possess strong verbal communication skills, as talking to members of the public is an essential part of the role.
Applicants must hold 5 GCSE’s or equivalent and have a demonstrable interest & enthusiasm for animal conservation, management & welfare.
