Scientific Officer

Permanent : 40 hours per week
Chester Zoo is one of the leading zoological collections in Europe with an international reputation for achieving its mission in conservation breeding programmes, research and education.
We are currently recruiting within our Science Team for a Scientific Officer to support and promote Chester Zoo’s applied conservation science activities to establish us as a centre of excellence for conservation breeding and animal welfare, and to ensure that our conservation and educational scientific activities both in the zoo and globally achieve the greatest conservation impact.
The Role
Our Scientific Officer will ensure an effective scientific and ethical research process is provided to both internal and external customers, ensuring timely advice based on scientific knowledge regarding the zoo’s main research themes, contributing towards optimising behaviour and welfare of animal collections and the conservation impact of Chester Zoo’s educational and conservation activities.
Where appropriate, our Scientific Officer will advise on research feasibility and make effective recommendations regarding resourcing the project while ensuring prioritization of cases of concern. They will ensure effective compliance with Chester Zoo’s scientific processes, ensuring all scientific activities conducted by Chester Zoo staff have scientific rigour, and are in agreement with the zoo’s research and ethical policies.
Our Scientific Officer will provide student research support on projects that support many teams within the Zoo, including Science, Discovery and Learning, Field Programmes and Collections. They will deliver lectures and talks to applied science stakeholders, influencing them to collaborate with Chester Zoo on research projects. They will also ensure effective dissemination of Chester Zoo’s scientific activities through targeted communications.
The ideal candidate will have:
•An MSc plus a minimum of 3 years research experience in an applied conservation science (Formal or Informal)
•A strong commitment to animal health & well-being and conservation
•The ability to establish credibility, command respect and influence at all levels.
•Demonstrated ability to innovate, lead, resource and deliver projects on time and to a high standard
•Ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal presentations and written communications, including media communications to stakeholders at all levels
•Proven ability to work in and contribute to a team environment
•Proficiency with statistical analysis
•Evidence of academic student supervision
Evidence of peer-reviewed publications, applied behavioural research experience and the ability to do complex statistical analysis are all desirable, along with knowledge and experience of zoo-based research.
Hours of work are 40 hours per week, worked Monday-Friday.
Salary is £24,017.15 per annum based on a 40 working week.
